Christer Strömholm (1918–2002) was a well-known photographer in his native Sweden, but is not well known in the rest of the art world. He specialized in portraits of individuals in real-life situations and photographed primarily in black and white. When he traveled to Paris in the late 1950’s, Strömholm befriended the transsexual women who worked the streets in the Place Blanche, and they allowed him to photograph them.
